3 Things a blogger should NEVER do. And Why

Having been blogging for three years now, I have witnessed many a blogger faux-pas on my journey. But, I believe that the below three points are top of my list when it comes to things a blogger should never do.

So, alongside a Parisian / captain Birdseye attempt to pull of a baker boy cap. Below are three things you should never do as a blogger, and the reasons why…

1.

Don’t Copy Other Bloggers’ work

As you wouldn’t plagairise an essay for an assignment. The same goes for blogging: Don’t steal someones words or imagery and pass them off as your own. If you have read an article that has inspired you, reference and link to that page. Or, if you use some one else’s image, make sure to either ask first or again credit the source.

Why shouldn’t I copy Other Bloggers work?

Apart from wanting to stand out on your own two feet. You shouldn’t copy other bloggers’ work because it can make readers / followers loose trust in your blog. I’m sure it won’t go down great in the blogging community either.

Tip: Be Yourself and set your own trends with unique content.

Don’t forget about SEO

In an age where the digital world can often take over from reality, on a daily basis. Google  – WARNING: other search engines available – is most people’s first point of call when they want to seek new information.

Why shouldn’t I forget about SEO?

If you don’t want your blog to get lost in a sea of a million others, you want to make sure you have optimised your website or blog to be picked up by Google. So that people can find, read and enjoy your blog. You also wouldn’t want to get penalised for ignoring a negative SEO or black hat technique, which you may not even have known about!

3.

Don’t Compare Yourself To Other bloggers

This is easier said than done. I know that it is hard not to compare yourself to others in ever aspect of your life. From your career, relationships and physical appearance to aspects of your personality. We will always want what other people have got and vice versa. Although within blogging I feel like this can sometimes spin ten fold, causing unnecessary catty comments and hate that we so often see from trolls online.

Why Shouldn’t I compare myself to other bloggers?

We all know where this leads. Actually, it ends up in a disaster of self doubt, self loathing and attacking all carbs in the kitchen cupboard. Self-comparison of any form is only going to end up leaving you with negative thoughts and feelings about yourself and your blog (I am pretty sure this is true for 99% of people, myself included).

Tip: Stop comparing & support other bloggers. Highlight positives of your own blog & success.
